A Carnivore's Guide to Ordering at Chipotle

Dining out when you follow a carnivore diet can be tricky. It's not as simple as just ordering meat only, because some restaurants use seasoning rubs or marinades which may add plants (and carbs) to your food.

If you follow a carnivore diet that includes seasonings, Chipotle has several options. Start by ordering a bowl with double protein (chicken, steak, barbacoa, or carnitas only). If you eat dairy, add sour cream, shredded cheese, and/or queso blanco. Avoid rice, beans, salsa, chips, and guacamole.

If, however, you follow a strict carnivore diet - just meat and salt, with no seasonings or dairy products - Chipotle is not an option for you. All of their proteins are seasoned, so you can't order plain unadulterated steak, chicken, or pork.

What to order at Chipotle on a carnivore diet with no dairy? 

1 - If you want a carnivore option at Chipotle without any added dairy, start by ordering a bowl.

2 - Choose a double portion of chicken, steak, carnitas (pork), or barbacoa (beef), or mix-and-match meats.

A single portion of protein at Chipotle is about 4 ounces, so a double portion is 8 ounces of meat. If you're really hungry, you could order two bowls.

3 - Choose "no rice," "no beans," and do not order any toppings.

Chipotle chicken.

A single serving of chicken is 4 ounces:  180 calories, 32g protein, 7g fat, 0g carbs.

A double portion of chicken is 8 ounces: 360 calories, 64g protein, 14g fat, 0g carbs.

Chipotle's chicken is seasoned with black pepper, chipotle chili, cumin, garlic, oregano, salt, sunflower oil, and distilled vinegar.

Chipotle steak.

A single serving of steak is 4 ounces: 150 calories, 21g protein, 6g fat, 1g carbs.

A double portion of steak is 8 ounces. 300 calories, 42g protein, 12g fat, 2g carbs.

Chipotle steak is seasoned with black pepper, chipotle chili, cumin, garlic, oregano, salt, sunflower oil, and distilled vinegar.

Chipotle carnitas (pork).

A single serving of carnitas is 210 calories, 23g protein, 12g fat, 0g carbs.

A double portion of carnitas is 420 calories, 46g protein, 24g fat, 0g carbs.

Chipotle carnitas are seasoned with bay leaf, black pepper, juniper berries, salt, sunflower oil,  and thyme.

Chipotle barbacoa (beef).

A single serving of barbacoa is 170 calories, 24g protein, 7g fat, 2g carbs.

A double portion of barbacoa is 340 calories, 48g protein, 14g fat, 4g carbs.

Chipotle barbacoa is seasoned with bay leaf, black pepper, chipotle chili, cloves, cumin, garlic, oregano, rice bran oil, and salt.

Chipotle chicken al pastor is a limited-time offering.

As of this writing (April 2023), Chipotle has a new signature protein - chicken al pastor. It is freshly grilled chicken seasoned with a marinade of Chipotle's signature adobo, seared morita peppers, and ground achiote with a splash of pineapple. It is finished with fresh lime and chopped cilantro.

Be aware that each 4-ounce portion has 4 grams of carbs, so use your discretion.

A single serving of chicken al pastor is 200 calories, 23g protein, 11g fat, 4g carbs.

A double portion of chicken al pastor is 400 calories 46g protein, 22g fat, 8g carbs.

How to order Chipotle meat and dairy carnivore bowls.

If you eat dairy on your carnivore diet, you have a few more flavorful options.

1 - Start with a double portion of protein.

2 - Choose "no rice" and "no beans."

2 - Add one or more of these carnivore-friendly toppings.

Shredded cheese.

One serving has 110 calories, 6g protein, 8g fat, 1g carbs.

Ingredients in Chipotle's shredded cheese are cheese cultures, milk, vegetable rennet, salt.

Sour cream.

One serving of sour cream has 110 calories. 2g protein, 9g fat, 2g carbs.

The  sole ingredient is cultured cream.

Queso Blanco.

If you don't mind a tiny bit of vegetable product in your tasty cheese sauce, or the 4 grams of carbs per serving, queso blanco is a carnivore-friendly topping option.

One serving is 120 calories, 5g protein, 9g fat, 4g carbs.

Queso blanco has a base of white cheddar, cultured cream, and milk, and is seasoned with chipotle chili garlic, onion, poblano pepper, salt, and tomato.

When I ate keto I ordered a double chicken chipotle bowl with some lettuce and salsa. Those toppings are a big no on a carnivore diet.

What NOT to order at Chipotle on a carnivore diet.

When you follow a carnivore way of eating, there are lots of things to avoid at Chipotle.

Do not order:

  • sofritas - soy-based protein

  • white or brown rice

  • black or pinto beans

  • burrito or taco shells

  • salad base

  • fajita veggies

  • any of the salsas

  • guacamole

  • tortilla chips

  • Chipotle-Honey vinaigrette.

These all are plant-based ingredients which, though delicious, are not part of a carnivore diet.

If you lean more towards ketovore or a keto diet, you can indulge in some guacamole, romaine, and salsas.
