I did Dr. Kellyann's Cleanse and Reset - My Review and Results

What is Dr. Kellyann’s Cleanse and Reset?

Dr. Kellyann's Cleanse and Reset is a 5 day grain- and dairy-free food plan to "detoxify, nourish, and restore your body for sustained weight loss."  It’s paleo- and keto-friendly and will help you set the restart button if you’ve been struggling to stick to your healthy eating plan.

It is whole-foods based, meaning you eat delicious, easy-to-prepare smoothies and soups made from simple ingredients you buy from the grocery store, like dark leafy greens, low-sugar veggies, lots of non-starchy veggies, and healthy fats like avocado and coconut milk.

You’ll nourish every cell in your body by flooding it with clean protein sources like collagen and bone broth.

It’s not a crazy “starve yourself so you can fit into your skinny jeans in 5 days” diet filled with weird drinks, sketchy processed “diet” bars or pills.

Rather, it is a five day food plan chock full of whole, real foods to gently detox your body, help heal your gut, and get back on track with your healthy eating plan. .  It's about flooding your body with nutrients that will not only cleanse your cells of toxins, but will give you the vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients to look and feel your healthiest.

The Cleanse is designed by a medical professional.

The five day Cleanse and Reset was created by Dr. Kellyann Petrucci, a board-certified naturopathic physician, certified nutrition consultant, and New York Times and USA Today bestselling author.

I read her book Dr. Kellyann’s Bone Broth Diet a few years ago when I was trying to heal my gut and find a simple and doable way to lose weight and boost my health. Through her books I have really been a convert to the health benefits of bone broth as well as healthy, low carb eating.

It’s like a healthy eating reset button.

For me, the image of a reset button was perfect. Though I strive to eat healthy, clean, and keto, I made some less than ideal choices over the holidays and was feeling a little chubby, sluggish, and just unwell. This cleanse put a stop to my icky eating and was an easy and delicious way to get back on track.

If you’re a person who wants to eat healthy but sometimes gets derailed by the busyness of life, stress, or Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, Dr. Kellyann’s Cleanse and Reset might help you get back on track too.

The entire 5 day plan, easy-to-follow recipes, approved food lists, a healthy lifestyle eating plan for after the Cleanse, tips and instructions are included Dr. Kellyann’s book. You can purchase the book from Amazon or from a local bookstore like Barnes & Noble.

Is Dr. Kellyann’s 5-Day Cleanse right for you??

This five-day food plan might be for you if:

  • You're gaining weight, especially around your belly.

  • You put on pounds easily and have trouble taking them off.

  • You are frequently bloated.

  • You suffer from constipation, diarrhea, or other digestive issues.

  • You're frequently tired or feel run-down.

  • Your sleep quality is poor or you wake up unrefreshed.

  • Your skin is dry, blotchy or dull, or you have fine lines or wrinkles.

  • You have eczema, psoriasis, or unexplained rashes.

  • You feel like you're aging more quickly than you should.

  • Your hair is thin and lifeless.

  • Your fingernails are dry and brittle.

  • You are frequently exposed to toxins from smog, traffic, household cleansers, or other sources?

  • You have auto-immune issues.

  • You are often angry, unhappy, or anxious.

  • You frequently have "brain fog."

  • You get sick often or have trouble bouncing back.

Before I read the book I was sure I wouldn’t do the cleanse because I am wary of radical eating plans and detoxes. I’ve done some weird things in the name of weight loss and good health, but my last detox was five years ago and it was Beachbody’s 3 Day Refresh. I not-so-affectionately referred to it as “3 Days of Misery.”

But when I started reading, I was answering “yes” to some of the questions up above. I do have auto-immune issues, I do sometime battle brain fog, my sleep is crap, and I do put on weight in the middle first.

Instead of beating myself up about not being a perfectly healthy eater or making sleep the priority it should be, I was inspired to do something kind for myself and my body. To do this Cleanse.

There are some people who should not do the Cleanse, like women who are pregnant or nursing, have a history of an eating disorder, are taking blood thinners, and those under 18 years of age, etc. As Dr. Kellyann cautions in the book, always check with your doctor first.

Bone broth soups are a part of Dr. Kellyann's Cleanse and Reset | The Keto Minimalist

How and why does this Cleanse and Reset work?

Unlike crazy starvation diets, you are flooding your body with all sorts of good things, while giving your digestive system a little rest. Here’s how…

The Cleanse is loaded with collagen.

Collagen helps firm your skin, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, pull out toxins, and promotes rapid weight loss while preserving lean muscle mass.

The Cleanse uses super healthy bone broth.

You’ll enjoy bone-broth soups that are rich in gelatin to heal your gut, and help reduce chronic inflammation. (And when your body isn’t chronically inflamed, it loses weight faster.) Gelatin also improves your hair, skin, and nails.

The Cleanse is packed with phytochemicals from fruits and veggies.

All of your meals are filled with healthy veggies and fruits that energize and cleanse your body, make your eyes and skin glow, and help you burn fat fast.

The Cleanse includes healthy fats.

The soups and shakes are rich in healthy fats that balance your hormones, make your brain happy, and build strong, skin cells.

The cleanse is low in carbs.

I love that this cleanse is low in carbs (and you can keep it totally keto if you want), to keep insulin low. It also helps normalize your levels of leptin—your body’s “hunger trigger.” This helps you lose belly fat and reduces food cravings.

I also love that this Cleanse uses whole-food ingredients you can easily find at your local grocery store. The only thing you might need to order is collagen, although the health section of many stores carry collagen now. (You can check the current price of collagen on Amazon: Dr. Kellyann’s Complete Collagen Protein.)

Supplies you need to get started.

Here’s what you need to do your first five day Cleanse and Reset.

Or, if you prefer don’t want to grocery shop, chop fruits and veggies, and haul our your blender, Dr. Kellyann makes a 5-Day Cleanse Kit she will ship right to your door. It has a Super Green Smoothie, Super Berry Smoothie, Lemon Chicken Soup, and refreshing Lemon Sips. Just add water and watch the pounds and bloat melt away. Just click the link below to take a peek at the kit!

Can I do this Cleanse and Reset on a keto diet?

YES, you can absolutely do Dr. Kellyann’s Cleanse and Reset if you follow a ketogenic diet. She explains how in her book, but here’s the scoop….

Keto Modifications for Dr. Kellyann’s Cleanse and Reset

  • Skip the fruit in smoothies, or limit it to small amounts of berries or grapefruit

  • Stick to non-starchy veggies in smoothies and the bone broth soups

Page 52 of the book lists all of the keto-friendly green smoothies, shakes, and broth loading soups you can enjoy. Here are a just a few of the delicious meals that are perfectly keto:

  • Lemon Ginger Green Smoothie

  • Mexican Fiesta Green Smoothie

  • Lemon Cream Shake

  • Chocolate Raspberry Shake

  • Thai Red Curry Soup

  • Creamy Broccoli Soup (my favorite!!)

You can also create your own keto-friendly soups using the “create your own recipe” formula in the book. I love that you can make your own creations, and I made a delicious creamy mushroom soup using baby portobello and shiitake mushrooms, celery, onions, homemade chicken bone broth, red pepper, and full-fat coconut milk.

The keto push.

This is an optional one-day pre-cleanse jump-start. You basically spend the day before the cleanse drinking nothing but bone broth. It helps you get into fat burning mode quicker. OK, it's a bone broth fast, let's be honest. I opted not to do the Keto Push because I'm not a big fan of fan of fasting, other than occasional intermittent fasting.

Green smoothies on Dr. Kellyann's Cleanse and Reset | The Keto Minimalist

What do you eat and drink on Dr. Kellyann’s Cleanse and Reset?

Each day you start the morning with lemon water, and then have four mini meals:

  1. Breakfast is a green smoothie with a scoop or two of collagen or bone broth protein

  2. Lunch is a nourishing collagen shake with greens, healthy fats and fruit (or the keto modification)

  3. An afternoon or evening snack is another green smoothie

  4. Dinner is a bowl of bone broth soup packed with veggies and healthy fats

All of your mini meals consist of healthy fats, low-carb veggies, collagen, or bone broth.

The book contains lots of recipes for your smoothie, shake, and soup options PLUS a formula for creating your own shakes and soups. I love designing my own soups and shakes because I used the ingredients I had on hand, or what sounded good in the moment (like my mushroom soup).

Super important option: You can swap out a bone broth soup for any of the green smoothies, and vice versa. I am not a smoothie girl and really don’t enjoy drinking smoothies, especially in January when I did the cleanse! By Day 3 I had switched over to hot, savory, delicious soup for all my meals.

I did Dr. Kellyann's Cleanse and Reset - My Review and Results

Is there a lot of cooking and food prep on the Cleanse?

You can do the Cleanse with ZERO food prep.

If you absolutely detest grocery shopping, food prep and cooking, you can purchase a “just add water” Cleanse and Reset kit on Dr. Kellyann’s website. It has smoothie and shake mixes and even the bone broth soup mix. It literally is as easy as just adding water. The kit also comes with a copy of the book. You can check it out here: Cleanse and Reset Kit

Or you can make food prep super simple. Here’s how.

Choose your recipes wisely.

This is what I did. I choose 2 green smoothie recipes, 1 shake recipe, and 2 soup recipes for my cleanse. A lot of the ingredients are similar anyway (leafy greens like spinach or kale, canned coconut milk, onion for the soups, etc.) so my shopping list was very minimalist.

I added a third soup by Day 3 when I decided to swap soup for most of the shakes, but I hadn’t planned it that way.

Purchase bone broth if you don’t want to make your own.

Bone broth soups are an important part of the Cleanse and making your own bone broth is really simple. Dr. Kellyann gives you several recipes inside the book.

But if you prefer convenience, just purchase a high-quality bone broth. Look for “bone broth” specifically, not chicken broth or turkey stock.

Here are some good sources of bone broth:

Chop ingredients all at once.

Look at your recipes and see what can be done in advance. Grab a cutting board and chef’s knife and cut up all the onion, celery, and veggies for your soups. If you didn’t purchase pre-washed spinach, kale, or other fruits and veggies, wash them and place them in containers in the fridge.

You can also pre-measure ingredients and put together “smoothie bags” that have your fruit or veggies, seasonings, etc. in individual Ziploc baggies and store them in the freezer.

Juice all your lemons.

Since you start every day with lemon water, I used my handy dandy lemon juicer to juice all my lemons at once and put the juice in a glass jar. A half lemon has about 1 tablespoon of juice, so I just poured a tablespoon of fresh lemon juice into my morning water.

Even though I’m a minimalist in the kitchen, my lemon juicer is one of my favorite kitchen gadgets. You can read about the six things you should have in your keto kitchen here: 6 Kitchen Gadgets Every Minimalist Keto Kitchen Should Have.

There are other food prep tips inside the book, and I’ll share some of my “real-life experience” tips later in this post.

I did Dr. Kellyann's Cleanse and Reset - My Review and Results

My experience on Dr. Kellyann’s Cleanse and Reset

When I think about trying a new diet plan, or exercise program, or lifestyle change, I want to hear what other, regular, ordinary people go through. Ladies like me who don’t have superhuman willpower. Women who are busy moms, or guys who are busy dads and don’t have hours to devote to food prep. Real people who sometimes struggle sticking to an extreme sort of food plan.

That’s why I decided to share my real life experience with you, if you’re considering doing the Cleanse. I have no idea if my experience or results are typical at all, this is just how it went down for me.

Day 1

I actually started a day earlier than I planned, just because I was excited to get started. I hadn’t shopped for food yet, so my first green smoothie was a sad little concoction of freezer-burned raspberries, wilted kale, a handful of macadamia nuts, a scoop of collagen, and water. I don’t recommend it, lol. But I do recommend jumping in when you feel ready!

I was SUPER HUNGRY this morning and I really prefer eating breakfast to drinking smoothies. But I tried to eliminate the emotional drama I was creating in my own head around the food I'm NOT eating.

I was really strategic with my meal planning so I didn’t have a huge shopping list at all. I also had some homemade bone broth in the freezer.

After grocery shopping I did a little food prep - chopping and measuring fruits and veggies - and made a batch of the Creamy Broccoli Soup.

I had a massive headache all day that had nothing at all to do with the Cleanse. I forgot coffee in the morning (because I’m not used to drinking a smoothie for breakfast) and I often get horrific headaches. Because I wasn’t feeling well, I went to bed early and didn’t have my fourth mini meal.

Day 1 Meals:

  • My sad little DIY raspberry green smoothie

  • Piña Colada Shake

  • Creamy Broccoli Soup

Day 2

I woke super thirsty with was surprising given all the liquids I had the day before. The headache was mostly gone, which was a good thing.

I used the last of my frozen bone broth to make the Butternut Squash Soup, which was really delicious.

When it was time for lunch I was just not feeling making a shake. I am not a smoothie person AT ALL. I was very excited to read in the book that you could swap soup for the shakes and smoothies and, as you can see from my meals, I did just that.

I had cravings for salt and olives but, surprisingly, not for cereal, tortilla chips, or Taco Bell Cinnabon Delights.

I was hungry throughout the day, but it wasn’t unpleasant or unmanageable.

Day 2 Meals:

  • Pumpkin Spice Smoothie and coffee

  • Creamy Broccoli Soup

  • Butternut Squash Soup

  • Butternut Squash Soup

Day 3

Again I woke up thirsty and had a big glass of lemon water. I made the Piña Colada Shake again but it was cold and snowy and I was just not loving it. (To be clear, it tasted good, I just don’t like drinking smoothies or large amounts of cold liquid.) That was the last smoothie or shake I had for the remainder of the Cleanse, ha ha.

I felt good. No headache, no tiredness. Craving canned green beans with butter, which was very weird.

Since I switched over to soups I had to make a batch of homemade chicken bone broth and another soup the next day.

Also, since I was now drinking all soups, I knew I would be missing some of the dark leafy greens from the smoothies. So I added a handful of spinach to my soups for extra nutrients.

Day 3 Meals:

  • Creamy Broccoli Soup with a handful of spinach leaves and coffee

  • 1/2 Piña Colada Shake

  • 2 bowls Butternut Squash Soup (also with spinach)- I ate late so just filled up on the soup rather than having more later as a snack

Day 4

I was feeling good. No headache and no issues with hunger. In fact I felt lighter and healthier, though I know that’s mostly mental. I had no cravings and my energy was good.

I made an AMAZING Mushroom Soup using the create-your-own-recipe formula in the book. It had shiitake and portobello mushrooms, celery, garlic, and onion, chicken bone broth, canned coconut milk and spicy red pepper. My husband - who will not eat anything “weird” - had the soup for dinner and he enjoyed it.

Day 4 Meals:

  • Creamy Broccoli Soup and coffee

  • Mushroom Soup

  • Butternut Squash Soup

  • the last of the Creamy Broccoli soup (insert sad face - I really liked it)

Day 5 - the last day!

I was excited and a little anxious on Day 5. I felt good but was suddenly a bit worried about going back to my old way of eating. Not my usual clean-ish keto eating, but the post-holiday carby eating I had done for the past few weeks.

I continued adding a handful of spinach to all my soups.

If you look at today’s menu you’ll see I just alternated two soups. It was not boring and I didn’t feel deprived at all. I really, really enjoyed the soup recipes, though the Broccoli and Mushroom were my favorites.

Dr. Kellyann outlines her Lifestyle Plan in the book for after the Cleanse, which is essentially dairy-free, mostly grain-free, and low carb. It’s very similar to my keto eating when I’m on my game. So I spent a little time planning meals for the upcoming days so I wouldn’t revert back to bad habits.

Day 5 Meals:

  • Butternut Squash Soup and coffee

  • Mushroom Soup

  • Butternut Squash Soup

  • Mushroom Soup

My best tips for doing Dr. Kellyann’s Cleanse and Reset

Here are some of the things that really helped make doing the Cleanse enjoyable and easy:

  • Don't forget coffee! Because I drank a smoothie for breakfast on Day 1 I totally forgot to make coffee afterward and was rewarded with a headache, lol.

  • Remind yourself, as often as you need to, WHY you are doing the cleanse and the good it is doing inside your body even if you feel hungry or sluggish or deprived.

  • Prep as much you can in advance. For me this meant chopping veggies for my soups and measuring the ingredients for the smoothies.

  • If you don’t have a Vitamix blender, rip the stems out of your spinach or kale IN ADVANCE. I sat in front of the Chiefs v. Titans AFC Championship game on TV with a big ol’ bag of spinach and ripped out all the stems at once. (My blender struggles with stems, and I really don’t like chewing a smoothie, lol.)

  • Buy prewashed cut up fruit, and prewashed greens to save time.

  • Use your phone to take a pic of the recipes you'll be making if you don't want to open the book every time you prepare a shake.

  • Measure the fruit for smoothies, don’t eyeball it! 1/2 cup is less than you think.

  • You can swap smoothies for the bone broth soup which was a huge plus for me!! I'd rather have warm, comforting soup than a cold smoothie so by day 3 I was eating soup almost exclusively.

  • Don't be shy with herbs and spices. Herbs, particularly fresh herbs, and spices are super nutritious and they really add flavor to your meals.

  • Use the “build-it-yourself” formulas to create your own smoothie, shake, or soup recipes. I made a really delicious portobello and shiitake mushroom cream soup using the formula.

  • Because I switched over to mainly soup, I was missing some of the dark leafy greens, like spinach and kale, from the smoothies. So I just threw a handful of greens into my bowl, added soup, and microwaved. It cooked the spinach, didn't change the flavor of the soup, and I got extra delicious nutrients.

  • Juice your lemons ahead of time. A half lemon (needed for the morning lemon water) has about 1 tablespoon of juice.

  • Be near a bathroom! All the liquids will have you peeing your brains out, lol.

I did Dr. Kellyann's Cleanse and Reset - My Review and Results | The Keto Minimalist

My results, and would I recommend Dr. Kellyann’s Cleanse and Reset??

I lost weight.

After five days of drinking collagen-rich green smoothies, and veggie-packed bone broth soups, I lost 4.5 pounds and I am thrilled. It’s so encouraging to see the scale move in the right direction after indulging a bit too much over the holidays.

But what I GAINED from the Cleanse is truly more important.

Surprisingly, I didn’t feel deprived.

In her book, Dr. Kellyann made the five day Cleanse sound EASY and ENJOYABLE. I was 100% sure she was wrong. After all, I’m not a newbie to weird diets and I have a lot of emotional drama around not eating exactly what I want.

I was shocked that I did not feel deprived. The recipes were really delicious and although I did have a bit of hunger which is normal, it wasn’t unpleasant or scary. I really did feel like I was honoring my body and nourishing it well.

I gained a renewed love and passion for my healthy (keto) diet.

It’s weird, but the only things I craved while on this Cleanse were green beans with butter, olives, and guacamole with lots of jalapenos. I had zero desire for tortilla chips, cereal, or ice cream, which are my usual temptations.

On the morning after the cleanse I was super motivated to continue my healthy eating. I started with a breakfast of eggs, mashed avocado, and roasted broccoli.

I really feel like I pressed a magical reset button to get myself back on track.

I was reminded that hunger is not awful.

I’ve always had an irrational fear of hunger. When I fly I pack my carry-on with enough snacks to feed the entire plane in the event of a delay. (You can read about keto travel snacks in this post: 10 Keto Travel Snacks You Can Take Right on the Plane.)

I’ve never had a lack of food in my entire life so I don’t know why hunger scares me so much.

The good thing about keto, when I’m doing it right, is that it suppresses my hunger. But when I do get a teeny tiny tummy growl I usually reach for a handful of macadamia nuts and a hunk o’ cheddar.

On Dr. Kellyann’s Cleanse and Reset I was hungry. Often. But I tried to eliminate all the mental drama around it.

You know what? It wasn’t painful. It wasn’t scary. It wasn’t even really unpleasant. It was just a sensation in my body.

It may be weird, but one of the biggest benefits to doing this Cleanse was realizing hunger will not hurt me.

I learned that much of my eating is based on habits.

You know how it’s 9pm and you finally have a chance to relax and watch Netflix and suddenly a craving for pork rinds and blue cheese dip hits?? Maybe that’s just me, lol. But seriously, much of my eating - at least the cravings and desires - are based on habits.

I like to watch TV with a snack so when I plop on the couch I automatically want something to eat.

Or I get a hunger pang and strangely find myself in front of an open refrigerator foraging for food.

The Cleanse made me realize I have quite a few not-so-helpful habits around food. Now that I am aware, I can work to change those habits.

If I’m watching TV and I’m truly hungry, I’ll eat something. Maybe I’ll wait a few minutes before grabbing a bite-of-this or taste-of-that because now I know hunger isn’t a horrible thing.

The Cleanse reminded me of the benefits of collagen and bone broth and I will include more of each in my meal plans.

I’m kind of a health nerd so I know how healthy bone broth and supplementing with collagen is. In fact, I have a scoop of collagen in my coffee every day.

And even though I make a pot of soup almost every week, I’ve gotten lazy and often will use regular ol’ packaged chicken stock instead of making my own bone broth.

Now I want to create the habit of making a pot of bone broth every week so my soups have lots of good-for-you gelatin. And if I don’t want to make my own, I can use purchased bone broth instead.

I will keep Dr. Kellyann’s Cleanse and Reset in my arsenal of healthy habits.

Dr. Kellyann says you can do this Cleanse as often as once per month. I put it on my calendar thirty days from now and, at that time, I’ll decide if I will do it again. If I am eating clean, keeping the weight off, and feeling good in my body, I’ll defer for another month. But if I've slacked in my healthy eating, or if I’m gaining weight, or feel unwell, I will do another Cleanse.

The next time will be even easier because I know exactly what to expect.

The Pros and Cons of Dr. Kellyann’s Cleanse and Reset

The Pros:

  • The plan is easy and straightforward. And trust me when I say that if I can do it, you can too.

  • You likely will lose weight and feel healthier after the cleanse is over.

  • It uses real food ingredients you can buy at any grocery store, like greens, non-starchy veggies, low sugar fruits, and healthy fats like avocado, ghee, and coconut milk.

  • If you hate cooking and food prep you CAN purchase a "done for you" kit from Dr. Kellyann's website that includes smoothie mix, soup mixes, and the book - you basically just add water. This is great if you don't want to cook or fuss with making homemade smoothies. (Click to see her 5 day cleanse kit.)

  • You may experience a little hunger, but it’s not overwhelming.

  • The recipes flood your body with delicious nutrients.

  • The Cleanse truly is a reset button - it helped me to get back to wanting to make healthy choices.

  • It explains, in an easy-to-understand way, WHY you are eating the foods you are and how they help nourish your body.

  • You can tailor the cleanse to your personal preferences - like me ditching the smoothies on Day 3 and eating only soups for the remainder of the Cleanse.

  • Dr. Kellyann has "build your own recipe" formulas for the smoothies, shakes and soups so you can really customize recipes to your liking.

  • She includes a lifestyle eating plan for AFTER the cleanse.

  • Bone broth is an important part of the Cleanse and it’s easy to make, but you can also purchase bone broth if you prefer.

  • You can repeat this cleanse every month to keep you motivated and on track.

  • The recipes are tasty and you can use them long after your cleanse is over!

  • If you don’t want to make smoothies, bone broth, or soups, you can purchase Dr. Kellyann’s complete kit with everything you need for your 5 day cleanse: Dr. Kellyann’s Cleanse and Reset Kit

The Cons:

  • Smoothies in the winter, lol! (Just kidding… many people love smoothies and the recipes are tasty.)

  • It takes a little time and effort to make your own bone broth, if you choose to do so.

  • You can't eat the same foods your family is eating, if that is important to you.

  • You will have to spend time preparing your smoothies, shakes, and soups, unless you buy the Cleanse Kit.

  • You will literally be in the bathroom all day from all the liquid, but that’s a little extra exercise in your day so it’s probably all good.

  • if you don't like bone broth or soups or smoothies, you'll have a hard time with this Cleanse.

My conclusion and would I recommend Dr. Kellyann’s Cleanse and Reset?

Despite being skeptical about Dr. Kellyann’s Cleanse and Reset, I am now a big fan. I lost almost 5 pounds and gained a new appreciation for eating healthy. It was easy-to-follow and I felt nourished and pampered, instead of punished and deprived.

The recipes were simple, flavorful, and healthy. There were lots of smoothie, shake, and soup options, or you could create your own recipes.

I came off the cleanse excited to continue my healthy eating journey.

So YES, I definitely recommend this Cleanse. If you’re feeling chubby or tired or not happy with your food choices, it’s a perfect option.
